Arm pain is often general in nature and can be caused by a number of things including a simple sprain, tennis elbow, bursitis or a pinched nerve. These are usually due to overexertion or mild trauma. You may find it’s associated with swelling or inflammation and redness. This can usually be treated with R.I.C.E measures within 48 hours of the displaying symptoms.

  • Rest. Be sure to take a break and give yourself some down time. Avoid strenuous activities.



  • Ice. Place a cold pack on the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes, three times a day.



  • Compression. Bandage the affected area to reduce swelling.



  • Elevation. Swelling can also be reduced by elevating your arm. If the pain, swelling or redness persists or increases after several days of R.I.C.E care, schedule an appointment with your medical provider. More serious causes of arm pain include breaks and fractures, angina and heart attack.

If you find that you have any of the following symptoms you should seek medical attention immediately: severe pain and swelling; mobility issues or sudden injury to the arm. This may be indicative of fracture or break; pain that occurs with any type of exertion, but is relieved by rest. This may be indicative of angina or heart disease; or pain that is accompanied by pressure, fullness or squeezing in the chest and could signal a heart attack. A doctor will assess your condition and prescribe the best course of treatment.
