Those people that talk to themselves are not necessarily mentally ill. Research has shown that people who cannot keep there thoughts to themselves may actually benefit from letting their voice be hears. Those people that vocalize their inner thoughts tend to be more likely to stay on task, remain focused, and have better perception. It has also been shown that children who talk out loud while completing tasks tend to learn better. Some people with mental illnesses do talk to themselves, but not all people who talk to themselves are mentally ill.
